Well the main reason we have troops their is actually because we wish to control them (in a sense), because of WWII they our most hated adversaries in that war, so we occupied the land and set up military bases there so that they would not try and rise up again (such as Germany after WW1)and we did the same thing with Germany after the war.
So we have our military there For the main reason of keeping them from creating a new one to fight us after the events of WWII, but you do have a point in the sense of Korea and China, as it gives the US a VERY strong Stratigic placement if we were to ever fight them.
