If the publishers don't touch used games prices on Xbox One (and if they don't on PS4, they won't on Xbox One) then you are exactly right. MS funneling used sales through "approved retailers" like Gamestop is actually a good thing for Gamestop. Publishers won't mind this either because almost all of the big execs at the biggest publishers always gush about amount of money Gamestop pumps into the industry and all the marketing dollars they spend on games that aren't even theirs. Gamestop employees trash things all the time. It's funny how each store seems to have their own personality and their own bias. I can go to the newest one in my area and they are huge Nintendo fanboys who trash everything else. One just closed down in my local mall and it was full of PC elitists. Another is about a half mile from the mall and are huge Battlefield fanboys and love the 360. I haven't seen any sort of pro-PS4/Xbone and anti-Xbone/PS4 stuff in any of my local shops yet. Where you might REALLY see some people trying to make some PS4 fans are in the smaller mom and pop type stores. For example, GameXChange. But you never know, MS might accomodate them as well. All you need is a connection to the cloud. |
Yes they will get some extra traffic by being an approved resaler but:
- There is now day 1 digital for all titles, most likely with pre download like Steam. (also on PS4 I would imagine, they should be pushing wiiU)
- Since physical copies aren't worth much anymore, more people will take the digital route.
- They can't be happy about 10 people sharing the same game, 2 at the same time.
The Xbox One is designed to be an online console with digital game licenses. The install discs are merely there for transition. Plus it's up to publishers if/when/how their games can be traded through this controlled system.
They reason they should be reluctant to sell xbox ones as of yet is because nobody knows for sure what all the conditions are going to be at launch and the year after. Spend half an hour with each customer trying to explain what you can and can't do with the console would turn me off.
