The EDRAM was the only thing tying the system together.

Without it, their DDR3 ram would bottleneck the entire system with its slow bandwidth.

They should have done one of two things:

1. Delay the system and replace the EDRAM + DDR3 with just GDDR5 ram. Essentially rip off what Sony is doing with the PS4. Lowering the cost of the system to at least $400, and then further subsidizing the machine with their cash reserves to a price of $300 to make up for the delay. Keep DRM and online checks.

2. Remove ALL DRM and online checks. Launch at $500 with no changes to the hardware and advertise the hell out of it banking on their xbox brand in North America and those 46 million+ LIVE users with all their friends accounts and achievements.

What they did in reality was the worst possible decision.

Release an anti consumer device with 90% of the same games as their competitors at $100 more. Total garbage decision all around. Don't think anything will save them from getting thrashed sales wise at this point.
