It's called subscription. people cried about $599 ps3 but after 6 years ps3 still = $599. PS4 on the other hand will be $399 + $300 (PS+) = $799 after 6 years for at least 50% of it's buyers.

that is true but Live and the Xbox One still cost more and doesn't allow access for apps without it. Also MMOs and free to play games don't require plus. I wonder if Live is a requirement for the online check ins and by extension the system.

XBL was a paid service because M$ could get away with it. WHen PSN launched with such barebones stuff, , the price for live was almost justifiable. Now M$ cant reneg on such a beneficial revenue stream as it was one of the reasons they could sell $99 360s among other things. Sony on the other hand never got to apply those bonus dollars till now and they're putting it towards a price cut.
I wont be surprised if the X1 HW is more expensive than ps4 to manufacture afterall M$ has been undercutting Sony's price last gen and could afford to take more losses so it's surprising that they will fail to do so this time around...or was $499 just part of their arrogance expecting people to think ps4 was junk?. The new kinect seems like a really expensive device on its own.

isn't smaller stuff supposed to be more expensive too? And PS4 is significantly more short and less wide than Xbone.

I read somewhere (I think Kotaku) that X1 was made to be large on purpose so it could stay in the center of the livingroom and control everything with no need for other devices. One device to do everything...
