I'm not so sure. Let's think of the 3rd console for the major companies.
Sony- PS3 did well in the end but lost all earnings from PS1 and PS2!. Very expensive at launch, lost many gamers to Xbox 360
Nintendo- N64 lost most of Nintendo's 3rd party support most likely for good due to expensive cartridges
Sega- Saturn. Expensive and lacked much support outside of Sega
Microsoft?- Xbox One. Negative press all round. Bad reaction on price. DRM etc
Atari- lost everything from Atari 2600 days and helped led to their demise as a hardware manufacturer
Maybe it's true. So weird!
