Glad they took that path - for me, what FarCry 1 (and later, Crysis, though on somewhat smaller scale) have done with that approach was best mixture of open world and linear progression - enough freedom to tackle your objectives the way you like, and enough structure to not alienate people not comfortable with completely open world shooters (and I've seen that when FarCry 2 launched, a lot of FC1 fans hated it).
Watched the gameplay video of that open level, and it really reminded me a lot of FC1, in very positive sense.
