It really hurt Sony bad to cut the PS3 price so quickly. Think that leads to MS being able to keep the price at a higher starting price point and quickly reduce to the same price as PS4 next year.

I dunno, lets figure it out together.......
Memory
Xb1- uses ddr3, which is on its way out as a standard
PS4- uses DDR5 which is what will be used most often in the future
So over the long term, the Ps4 wins
--------------------------------
RROD-
Xb1- is rumored to have it, and MSFT has a history of engineering failures with its console
PS4- wont have RROD
which would you think increases costs?
----------------------------------------
paying for online play
Xb1- MSFT has always had XBL gold
PS4- now sony has PS+ monthly fee for online
only change here is that Sony incorporates a monthly cost, which should help with the up-front cost that you are referring to

Die Shrinks
-PS4 usually has them first, nuff said
