For online gaming, Sony already "forces" you to connect to PSN first, regardless of who owns the game servers. That's why you always had to have the latest firmware update and sign in to PSN first before being able to play online. First party games can continue to use Sony servers, while other developers / publishers can either use their own servers or games can support player-to-player gaming. This is no different from what Microsoft is doing on the 360, and what they will most likely do on the One.
The difference lines in offline gaming. Sony said that disc based games will work without going online (and they didn't mention anything about first party or 3rd party games, so it looks like publishers cannot do anything about this). Microsoft said that all games, even for offline play, will need to check in at least once every 24 hours or they will not work.
