How is the Ones and Steam's internet service different?

Well, to me Steam is just something like on consoles, installation from disc.I buy Alan Wake disc, I install it to steam, now I can feed my disc to my dog and game will never be unavailable for me.
Actually I guess I could sell the game somehow.
