As someone who games on PC quite often Steam provides a massive convenience for the PC market while I'm not sure if the same approach is good for consumers on consoles, if you game solely on console it'll look like it's the same situation only with open platforms like PC Steam gives many benefits. People have already mentioned the offline mode and so on but also factor in that with Steam you not only get cheaper prices and sales but you don't have to pay any platform specific subscriptions to play online, the are features like workshop and green light which accommodate mods and community created games and your games may be tied to your account but you can migrate all of them to future PCs with ease.
