So I've been playing a little sim game called Game Dev Tycoon, which is basically a more advanced version of Game Dev Story on mobiles. It's not without technical problems (and possibly balance problems - this game can be brutal), but even more so than Game Dev Story, you feel like you're part of gaming history.
Let me Illustrate...
I was contracted by Deep Platinum to produce a top of the line RPG for the Vega DreamVast, a genre I'm respected for thanks to the classic Western-themed STES game "Wild Armaments", among other things. Having just finished my new cross-gen engine and unlocked the Multigenre ability, I set to work on a RPG/Adventure hybrid, because apparently Adventure games are welcomed on DreamVast while RPGs get the cold shoulder.
Weeks later, I find out that the Vony PlaySystem 2 is close to release, and analysts were predicting DreamVast doom. But did I back down? No, I simply started my marketing campaign ("Vega does vhat Vonny von't!", I tell myself), dug in my heels, and delayed release (for a week or so) to after June's G3 conference in order to reach critical hype levels.
The next week, the week of the PlaySystem 2 launch, my DreamVast RPG, Lost Dreams, sold 2.2 million copies (just that week alone) and averaged 9.75 accoding to the Famitsu-like four-reviewer system. Yep.
Too bad Vega is bound to fail anyway - I'm just looting the sinking ship and making history while I'm at it.
