I think one point is fair:
Square thought FF7 success was because of it's cinematic experience.

The truth is it was successful because of all the small stories you could unveil while playing the game. The great fighting system (materia), the chocobo breeding, golden saucer and the stories of the characters while playing the game (not the cutscenes ). In general PLAYING THE GAME was a great experience, much better than just watching the cutscenes.

Result, Square has been searching for another big hit by taking the cinematic route, not the complex-game that delivers a great experience one. Hence... FF13
