Nah. Not always expensive. My old Radeon 6950's were $200 AUD each and they unlocked into 6970's.
Heck, I've seen a couple deals of Radeon 7950's for $180 here, that's a crapload of power for such a small price, equivalent in GPU performance of a Playstation 4 and Xbox One's GPU's combined.
However, quick look on newegg, the USA is paying more than us Australians, but keep an eye out and you will see a bargain, especially as the Radeon 8000 series comes in.
