Not sure what you mean. The reason why I think it'd be better long term is simply because the rebels winning at some point is a foregone conclusion basically. They won't take any territory but they'll continue to be a major drain until something happens that eventually leads to the fall of the Assad government.
So why not just get it out of the way sooner rather then later.
