Luckily I can close the door on them, because it's perfectly legal for me to own downloaded copies or loaned media.
With physical copies, you own the disc and the box. You can do with it whatever you want, almost literally, no matter what any company tries to enforce. There is one exception; You don't own the data on these discs an buy a license to use it (in which you were correct) along with the ownership of medium. Which means you're not allowed to distribute the data for personal gain. This applies to every form of media; whether it be music, film or software. It's also including books, just replace 'disc and box' with 'paper' and 'data' with 'text'. Software in particular has an exeption though, it's not allowed to own a copy of any type of software. For whatever reason this is different from film and music.
This is European regulation though, don't know what the rules are elsewhere.
