I just want to point out that when we transitioned from Xbox to Xbox 360, the same was true. Your friends list stayed exactly the same. If you had a paid subscription, it became an Xbox LIVE Gold account. While you didn't have a Gamerscore or Achievements with the original Xbox LIVE, it wouldn't have made any sense for those not to transition over. The service is the same service, it isn't as if the base services change.
