its a browser based system.. you could access it from your phone browser.. they don't need to buy new hardware or something like that.. and since its MSs own registration system Gamestop would probably get free access..

probably a code pressed on the disc.. or they could put it in a pc bluray drive and pc software will read it out MS will probably give those away when you are a partner to the program..

Like every freakin PC game you buy at the store, it will come with a code, printed on the manual or on a card in the box, there is no need to press a code on a disc or encode it somehow.
