Onlive was a bigger service than Gaikai in every aspect (Users, patents, assets, support, ...)
Sony bought Gaikai for 380 million USD in July 2012. Onlive was sold for 4.8 million USD in October 2012.

MS built up a cloud service with the knowhow they already had in their company. MS made big bets on the cloud with Azure, MS Office 365 and a lot of tools and servers. Now this comes to Xbox One for free.
