I remember Sony did mention that the PS4 will be a big multimedia box like PS3. It's just that they'll focus on all the gamer related aspects before going on to that, which makes sense because gamers are the ones who are early adopters of such high prized hardware. By the time the box launches and then comes down in price for the mass market, they can add in a ton of multimedia features and advertise and position it as a big multimedia box to the mass market.
