I believe what requires the 24 hour Internet connection is the guide. If anyone here has used a Mediaroom-based cable TV box knows well that every 24 hours it phones home and updates the guide information. I doubt this will be different with Xbox One.

Also, I'm fairly certain the Xbox One will be checking for system, game, and application updates on a fairly regular basis. So an always on/always connected Xbox One will likely phone home, request updates, and go from there.

No, if they plan on being able to transfer game rights then the xbox one has to check if the game is still tied to your account. Hence the daily log in requirement. If not then second hand sales are outright blocked and the value of your game is zero as soon as you unlock it for your account.

There is another possibility in that you need to be connected online to 'uninstall' the game, maening unlock your game key for resale. Then it doesn't need to check online daily (makes more sense) However that still blocks 2nd hand sales by shops and probably by yourself, since MS still owns the key and holds the transfer procedure to 'give' your game key to another account holder.

The only way I can see where retail partners come in:  When you trade in your game they are required to do an online check to see if that game key is no longer tied to an account. (maybe that will remove the game key from your account, disabling the game, but needing 24h checks by your system) Then they can re-sell that disc with an additional second hand sale activation card. Pretty complicated procedure. And forget selling it on Ebay or lending it to a friend.

All speculation, I wish they would clear up their plans. By tie-ing the game key to your account and not needing the disc anymore it makes things very complicated.  Basically xbox one is an enhanced Steam box. With an online fee, less games, premium price on games, less flexibility.  It is not like the old pc retail model. There I could install the game to several pcs, no online drm or account activation required.

I'm also curious if they will keep the silver account. Single player games still need online activation, should be easy with a silver account. However what of single player games with cloud enhancements.

Hopefully E3 will clear up a lot of things.
