Same. The fact that this along with the fake audience sound supposedly is news material is mind-boggling.

Goes hand in hand with the rise of "reality" TV: People trust way too much of what they see.

The clapping wasn't fake, it was just from Microsoft employees.  There were times when it was total dead silence and you could tell either Mattrick or the other guy thought there would be a more positive response.  I don't think anyone should expect the press to clap.  Not when nearly every person there seemed to be live blogging the event.  You could clearly see some seemed to be balancing laptops on their laps while they watched, so I think clapping was out of the queation and the presentation should have been directed as such.

Microsoft employees = Fake audience

I don't consider them a fake audience.  I consider a fake audience to be a laugh track.

I think the Microsoft employees were there because this was an event not only for the press and a few developers, but for employees as well.  If Microsoft wanted to fill the venue with press or developers, they could have just invited more.  Instead, they wanted a venue where Xbox Team members could attend to see the presentation, as well as a small cadre of press and developers.

I don't consider them plants, I consider them actual audience members.  Though, someone definitely recognized that no applause was happening when people were expecting applause because the Microsoft employees began chiming in.  Prior to that they were just as quiet as everyone else.
