The clapping wasn't fake, it was just from Microsoft employees.  There were times when it was total dead silence and you could tell either Mattrick or the other guy thought there would be a more positive response.  I don't think anyone should expect the press to clap.  Not when nearly every person there seemed to be live blogging the event.  You could clearly see some seemed to be balancing laptops on their laps while they watched, so I think clapping was out of the queation and the presentation should have been directed as such.
