If the people who buy Final Fantasy were real JRPG fans, then other JRPGs should sell big as well. It's not happening though. The series is picked up by the uneducated masses who buy it because their friends buy it.

Indeed. It's not unheard of that casuals buy games from more than one genre at any given time. Also, nowadays no real JRPG fan buys Final Fantasy anymore, because the series has been watered down for casuals. No real gamer would associate themselves with Final Fantasy, because it has become such a shallow affair.
