It's not a matter of nostalgia (the poor-man's straw argument to whip out anytime someone brings up how great things used to be versus today). It's a matter of gaming principles, and priorities. A handful of companies still have those priorities straight. But many, I think, do not. Developers need to cut the mega-budgets, and focus on making games that are actually FUN to be physically playing through. Gameplay should not be a secondary background thing you have to do to get through a story. It should be THE focus, with everything ELSE, graphics, music, story, etc., as GARNISH, supporting and enhancing, ADDING TO the gameplay experience.

This annoys me so much.  I HATE when people tell me that, no, you can't enjoy this or that because it's not the way it's SUPPOSED to be.  Honestly, man, those aren't principles, they're just your opinions, and I really, really don't care if you think everyone is doing it wrong by liking what they like.  Holy cats, that bugs me.

Why does it bother people so much when someone else likes something different?  Why do they have to hop on their high-horse and preach about how what they like is the RIGHT way?  Why is it so bloody hard to accept that different people like different experiences?

If there are people out there who like cinematic games with very little gameplay then so be it.  If there are people out there who like games where you do nothing but jump over rabbits, one after the other, then so bloody be it.  If people want non-stop cut-scenes and QTE events then they every right to play those types of games.  It hurts me not at all.  Better that than a world where everything is a mindless platformer that you can play with most of your brain switched off.

Developers need to keep making the games they want to make and the games people want to play.  Those who don't like that need to deal with it.

I think you really need to calm down, and quit flipping out over a non-issue, first of all.

Secondly, I think you're a bit confused, because in THIS context, pertaining to the question that THIS thread is asking, which is "what is most important to you in a video game", OPINION and PRINCIPLE are the exact same thing. Your personal gaming principles ARE your gaming opinions/tastes/preferences personified. It's ALL subjective, period.

The irony of you yelling at me, telling me that I'm wrong to be (as you assume) demanding everything be a certain way, and that people can't like something different, is almost "meta" in it's reach. You're basically telling me that it's not okay to have my own opinion about gaming while at the same time ostracising me for allegedly attacking OTHER people for having their own opinions about gaming.

You obviously didn't really read (or get) all of what I was saying. And all of what I said, was 100% MY opinion, that in your own words, I "have every right to think, and to want that out of gaming". I never said every game had to be a 2D platformer, if you had actually bothered reading what I wrote you CLEARLY would have noticed that I stated, rather plainly, that what I was TALKING about, was the design philosophy, the APPROACH to game design and development. I clearly stated, OVER AND OVER again, that the emphasis of most major game development seems to have moved away from gameplay, and more to presentation. I think (as many others do), that that needs to shift BACK. But I ALSO very VERY clearly stated, in plain English, that I absolutely thought there was ROOM for games that were "just cinematics and QTEs". If that is what someone likes, well so be it. I PERSONALLY think it's a rather shallow and pointless style of game, but then again, that's my OPINION, now isn't it? Right.

You wasting your time "giving me a talking to" over what was very obviously your own misinterpretation/misunderstanding of the OPINIONS I expressed, was sorely unneeded, and certainly unwarranted. Next time you want to chastize someone for having the audacity to have their own well thought out and reasoned OPINION on a subject, you might want to stop to make sure precisely what it is their principle/stance/taste/OPINION actually is before commencing in your rant.

Good day.

You NEED to understand that I know we're talking about your opinion, but you NEED to realize that I think it's a self-centered and arrogant opinion.  In my opinion.  Do you understand now?

Unless you're telling me that I can't have the opinion that your opinion is wrong?

Also, anyway, you NEED to understand that you're wrong.  " A handful of companies still have those priorities straight," implies an absolute.  It's silly to suggest that you meant "opinion" in that instance.
