It's for the best that it ends now, at least for home consoles. If you think about it you don't really want them to run the franchise into the ground with more sequels/prequels, they achieved what they wanted to achieve with Uncharted and now it's time to move on. You have to consider that Naughty Dog worked on nothing but Uncharted games for 6 years, they must be sick of the franchise by the end of UC3 after making 3 very similar games. I doubt Naughty Dog really care much about sales, as long as they're in the green it doesn't bother them. If they did care about sales they wouldn't be making TLoU but instead an Uncharted 4.
ND split into 2 teams and 1 is lucky enough to work on something new (TLoU) but what of the first team? Do you think it's fair that they are forced to make another UC game just because they know it'll probably be safe? I don't think so. I think they want to move on to something more inspired. It does make sense that they move on to bigger and better things. Sony really tried to make Uncharted into a huge franchise with their most ambitious marketing campaigns and giving away millions of copies via bundles but it's still not very big so they obviously will want to create a new IP next generation that could be a bigger and better franchise without depending on so much help from Sony to be successful.
To some up for people skipping to the end, Uncharted should end on home consoles & Naughty Dog should create a new IP to define a new generation of consoles instead of going with the safe option of milking more Uncharted games.
