It's pretty hard to distinguish. However, personally living in the United States, I would say that Halo is a bigger franchise to the public eye here. It's far more of a household name and generally more well known. Halo is somewhat of a cultural revelation among a lot of youth here. I don't believe Gran Turismo has that status (Anywhere). With that being said, it's still very hard to determine.
From an investment standpoint, there has to be concern over the continual milking of the Halo franchise and how it will effect the long term growth of it, as well as another company taking over the Halo formula and trying to make it work. If I were investing, I wasn't so much concerned with Halo releases on the 360. The basic engine and fundamentals were already there. It's the future of the franchise, post 360 that I'm concerned with. Building a Halo from the ground up, will be a far different task than building one off of pre-existing elements on a system with a not so secured American hardware strong hold. However, Halo DOES exist in the hot FPS market and it's literally the primary Xbox game.
From a global popularity stand-point and ability to hit a portion of every market? Unquestionably, Gran Turismo. It's the Racing Sim on consoles and the sales it had this generation just continue to prove it. If the PS3 were more successful in the United States, it would have easily sold 12 million+
I'd say it's just too early to tell. Gran Turismo has longevity, certainly hasn't shown much drop off in terms of selling power world wide, caters to more markets in more locations and sells well despite being in a very limited genre. Halo on the other hand has had more short term success with increasing sales, albeit with a far higher marketing budget but it's success resides primarily in one region and one region only and it is existing on the most popular genre existing today.
He's wrong that Halo is the best first person title ever and you are correct that Gran Turismo is relative in terms of the comparison. However, it's not black and white by any means. Personally, I'd say Halo is larger because I have a bias towards FPS over Sim Racers and I live in NA. However, I realize that someone could live in Japan and love racers far more than another run of the mill shooter. So it's negligible.
