Lieutenant Zappykins here, as someone who was out for a long long time before Will and Grace came out, I felt a good part of the show as making fun of gay people. I know many people liked it, but I didn't think it was funny, more just mean. I would of actually prefered the show if it was just Will and Grace and if they had killed of Karen and Jack. I thought shows like Buffy the Vampire slayer did a much better job of portraying gay people. In it some people, like Willow, just happen to be gay and it's just an aspect of their character. Not a carear choice or comedic device. Currently I think Doctor Who and Torchwood do a nice job. |
The show wouldn't have worked without Jack and Karen. I agree that the show ran mostly on stereotypes but I never got the feeling it made fun of gays. Like naruball said, the show is was a comedy and comedies usually tend to exagerate things in order to get laughs. I did get the sense that as seasons went by they made Will more and more stereotypical but I guess it was due to the writers running out of ideas.
