With all those cancellations, it's a wonder that Will & Grace did so well back in 1998.

Lieutenant Zappykins here, as someone who was out for a long long time before Will and Grace came out, I felt a good part of the show as making fun of gay people.  I know many people liked it, but I didn't think it was funny, more just mean.  I would of actually prefered the show if it was just Will and Grace and if they had killed of Karen and Jack.

I thought shows like Buffy the Vampire slayer did a much better job of portraying gay people.  In it some people, like Willow, just happen to be gay and it's just an aspect of their character.  Not a carear choice or comedic device.

Currently I think Doctor Who and Torchwood do a nice job.

But, Will and Grace was a comedy. Of course they're gonna make fun of everything, including the gay part. Buffy wasn't a comedy, so making fun of it would be out of place.

South Park and Family Guy make fun of gay gus all the time, but overall they're extremely positive, and even go as far as preaching when it comes to gay rights.

Jack represents something that many gay men want to distance themselves from for whatever reason (probably because camp guys annoy straight guys the most). I thought the show was incredible (my favourite comedy and one of my favourite shows). The showalso gave me the courage to come out for the first time to a friend, so it has a special place in my heart.
