Smoking is a disgusting habit that kills you and inconveniences everyone around you. The harder they make it for people to get, the better.
I seriously chuckle every time I am behind someone in line at a store and they ask for one pack of name brand smokes and it's like $7.50. LOL. Or the sales that people have on packs of cigarettes. "hey only $6 a pack when you buy 5!". I worked at a grocery store when I was 16 and you could buy an entire carton for less than that. I hope these changes have lowered the number of people smoking. |
If people want to make poor choices, we have to let them. It's not up to us to decide what other people should or should not be doing. I am honestly surprised there are so many people that are in favor of banning things. It makes no sense to me. Why do you care so much about someone you've never met? All you're doing is voting to be taxed in order to ban things other people want.
Prostitution? Police shouldn't waste their time (our money) on trying to impede that sort of thing. Same with marijuana and underage drinking and smoking. It's up to parents to be good parents. You can't save everyone, and even if you wanted to, I'd rather you not do it on my dime. People that support banning and controlling everything should pay for their own crusades, and leave the rest of us out of it.

The people are addicted. I feel the same about them as I do when I visit homeless shelters or see TV ads of starving kids. Do any of these affect me on a day to day basis? No. But that doesn't mean I can't feel sorry for them or want them to get help. This is a way to help.

Comparing people who smoke cigarettes to homeless people? Yikes! Not sure where you're going with that, dude.
As I said, if you want to help people, that's great. Go out and help people. There are people starving and addicted in your city right now. Go and help them, or start a charity, or volunteer somewhere. Don't force everyone else to pay for things just because you think they're good. I'd rather that people who think all of us should be paying for all of this, you know, not do so on our dime, while they sit around and complain about the state of things.

Wasn't comparing smokers to the homeless at all. Was comparing the simple fact that they are people in a situation where they need help.
And I donate time and money to charitable causes already. I wouldn't mind a supposed tax increase to help get addicts off a drug killing them. Though, with the insame amount of tax already put on a pack of smokes, idk how much of a hike, if any, this would require. Another article on this bill says NY state is also trying to raise the minimum price for a pack of cigarettes above $10. I welcome this move too. The previous price cuts already detered youth smoking quite a bit. Making them have to get an actual adult to buy them and making them pay over $10 per pack would deter it even further. And what liberties is this infringing on? Someones legal right as an 18 year old to smoke cigarettes? Oh the humanity.
