Sony has released its financial results for fiscal year 2012 today as expected and they’ve made a profit.

The company has been combining the numbers for PS3 and PS2; and PSP and PS Vita, so we don’t have accurate numbers of how much they shipped.

The PS3/PS2 totals are at 80.4 million compared to Xbox 260′s 77.2 million. It’s not clear how much the PS2 shipped but if it did less than 3 million then the PS3 has officially surpassed the Xbox 360 in worldwide sales.

However, that is insignificant now. Sony is expecting increased sales for the next fiscal year due to the introduction of the PS4. The operating income will be flat YOY because of research and development, and marketing expenses for the new system.

Sony shifted slightly less software this fiscal year compared to the last one but the drop isn’t that big which shows that consumers are still buying a lot of PS3 games and it’s still a viable platform. The PS3 hardware and software sales along with PS4 sales should offset the expenses generated due to the next-gen shift.

The company has made $458 million in net income for FY 12 mainly due to sales of assets.

So what do you guys think about the numbers? The PS3 is now confirmed as undertracked it seems! Will VGChartz do something about this, or is it impossible to correct this because of tracking problems and whatnot?
