Does the religious myth benefit modern society or not?

Ask anyone who's found liberation and life from a twelve step group (Alcoholics Anonymous) or had their life transformed by religion (I'm thinking people coming off drugs/prostitution, etc, which I know several who are now upstanding contributors to society) and I think you'll have your answer.
