Welcome to the lack of a hardware scaler in the PS3. If you have a 1080i-only TV, you're f***ed. Sony left it to the developers to include 1080i resolutions on the disc so you are entirely at the mercy of the developer's budget to include 1080i or not.
I ran into this problem before I bought a new HDTV. It's very frustrating and I feel your pain.
