If most of our society was educated and intelligent, then you'd probably be right. However, a sizable amount of our population is largely ignorant. The more ignorant, the more important it is to have a system that backs up laws and rules with an idea of "right and wrong". How many people are there who actually understand why we have laws? How many people actually understand why order is important for a relatively weak species?
