You are forgetting that there is fundamental dichotomy ingrained in human nature. We are just as prone to sadism as we are to altruism. We aren't just cooperative but competitive as well. There really are two sides to any argument for anything that is proposed. Without a consistent theme, thread, or belief. All we are left with is anarchy, and that precludes the possibility of real progress.
Society like any natural system follows the same path as all natural system. Simplicity lays the ground work for the far more complex systems to follow. You might not know this, or at all appreciate this, but your contemplation is the outgrowth of a philosophy that stems from the age of enlightenment. Questioning the establishment, and a focus on the greater good of all mankind. Are hardly universal concepts, or even concepts that were common throughout history.
Your ability to reason as you are stems from a moralistic philosophy. That states that man is of a right to question the nature of the establishment. It is actually a rather radical concept. You can say well we don't need these ingrained morals, but your entire thinking is based entirely around them. It is like saying we don't need air to breath. You couldn't say that if there wasn't any air. Like it or not you cannot separate yourself from your own philosophical foundation.
The reason these things persist goes to the heart of your argument. They persist, happened globally, and over the coarse of human history, because they are what gives rise to reasoned thinking. You can't question a line of reasoning without first having a line of reasoning to question in the first place.
