It gives people something to believe in when they are at their lowest but religion holds back so much progress. Just look at the anti-gay, anti-abortion morons. They have no real reason to oppose it, but say because god said so! and to add to things, you have the climate denying religious nuts in Congress who talk about Noah's Ark as evidence to back up their crazy claims. Religion has some good and some harm, but it's the extremists (of all religions) who do the damage because they are too ignorant to accept the facts, deny the technology and medicine which really helps us. Maybe that's why the US was so modern as a society back in 1776, as it's leaders were mostly atheists or moderate christians with common sense
