So 16 would be your minimum age to even carry a firearm...but just two years later at 18 go ahead and put an M16 in his hands and ship him off to Afghanistan? That seems a bit ridiculous. 

I think 12 is a fair age for a kid to start shooting. But of course at that age it should just be a small calibre .22 rifle. Like I said in my other post, I'd rather be around a 14 year old with two years of gun experience, than an 30 year old who hasn't touched one before. 

I think you might be taught how to use an Assault Rifle in the Army... Here in Germany almost no one knows how to use a firearm before they are drafted, yet I don't hear reports of our soldiers accidently offing themselves in Afghanistan.

And kids aren't taught at the shooting ranges weapons safety and how to properly shoot? Of course they are. This was a case of irresponsible parents letting a five year old have a gun by himself.
