The younger you get children acquainted with firearms the better. They'll be more knowledgeable, more skilled, and will learn to take them seriously (will realize they aren't toys) if they are introduced to firearms at a young age.

I think around 12 is probably a good age for a child to get his first .22. It's cheap, ammo is cheap, no recoil, but perfect for target practice, and getting kids acquainted with a firearm. And it's powerful enough to kill small animals, and even a man if you hit him in the right spot. So even a .22 can teach kids that guns aren't toys.

Then more into the teen years go ahead and get the kid a shotgun or more powerful rifle.

I'd feel safer around a 14 year old with a gun (who was introduced to guns around age 12) than an adult who has never handled a gun before.
