I don't think so.  If it was, it backfired.  I think a lot of HD DVD fans that were extremely bought in might be thinking to go digital distribution rather than buy blu-ray.  

I don't see the sales going through the roof because of this.  You can get regular DVD players for "at least a hundred" dollars cheaper then most Blu-ray players...  Until Blu-ray gets down to the $75-100 per player mark I don't see a lot of people dropping everything for it.  Also, the cost of each movie is $5-10 more than regular DVD.  And let's not forget to get the benefit from blu-ray you still have to buy decent sized HD TV and Component/HDMI cables putting it out of the cost area for many families and people starting out in the real world.

I think lots of people will look at the total cost and think "gee, why would I buy that".
