Eiji Aonuma has been talking about the latest Zelda game

Really interesting stuff.

This, especially, caught my eye: "In fact, Aonuma says this new Zelda game may be the most inventive yet."

That's quite a statement. I also appreciate the fact that the 3D effect plays a major part in the game. I know not everyone appreciates 3D, but since Nintendo decided to embrace this technology it might as well make games that take full advantage of it.

Completely agreed on that part, I genuinely did a double take. A Link to the Past is a stunning design template to follow, but I do have concerns Nintendo are going to fall into being afraid of stepping outside of that shadow--as they largely have been with 3D Zelda since Ocarina. Both are towering masterpieces of game design, but I do want Nintendo to risk their arm and provide a new example of stunning game design under the Zelda brand without adhering closely to Ocarina and Link to the Past.

I think we could see some really interesting things in terms of how the in-game real estate is used, thanks to the importance of depth and this new painting-Link mechanic, but I worry it's not enough to build an entire Zelda adventure on. As good as time shift stones were in Skyward Sword, they weren't enough to build the entire adventure around, for example. That being said, if Nintendo can conjure this sense of depth and perspective, make use of it in real playing terms, combine it with the environmental and architectural challenges that utilise the painting mechanic and throw a parallel dimension into the mix, we could get something very exciting.
