Only thing I can think of is scanning real objects in from every angle.

One major issue with predictions is that they don't take into account future developments e.g. PC's and the internet, food production and fertiliser. I will say that reality could be reached with <2500 TFlops on that premise alone.

You misunderstand:

Food production and fertiliser is an example of a future development that wasn't taken into account when a prediction was made about food production.
