I don't think it is bad that they are sending direct messages to Wii owners that a new and better system is available.
But their marketing in general over the last few years has been trash. The Nintendo Directs are good but outside of those they seem to have fallen off in understanding how to reach any audience outside of Nintendo faithful and they are suffering for it. I don't know if they lost some key personnel that helped advertise the Wii but I suspect as much given everything I've seen them do to try to market the Wii U and most of their games over the past two years.
