How exactly did it improve gameplay, and how does that outweigh MK7's advantages?


Being able to hold and switch between multiple items along with the item differences that came with choosing different racer combinations made it much more tactical and dynamic. 

To be honest I haven't played 7, but I'm just saying that's why a lot of people like DD.  It's my personal favorite for those reasons.  The games have all just seemed "same-old-same-old" since then (with the exception of DS's challenge mode, which is another feature that should have stayed).
