Gaming used to have the image of nerdy guy tapping away at his computer in a basement. Or that it was primarily for kids.

Wonder when the image changed from that to the now CoD playing swog dude-broski mangs derps.

Do you really want to know? About the time Xbox arrived, actually. About the same time that various kinds of shooters became what gaming was "All about", and about the time when flash-over-substance became the development model of the gaming industry.

Basically, about the same span of time that gaming really starting becoming more "mainstream". Look at it now. Is it "better"? I'd argue not.

In fact, I'd argue that while some great games DO still come out, that gaming as a whole was MUCH better off way back when, in the 8bit and 16bit generations, and in the heyday of the arcades, not to mention back when "PC gaming" meant actual PC games, and not just console games ported to PC. It was a different world back when it was "just for nerds and kids". Why? Because back then developers didn't bother trying to make games to please everybody, or to sell billions of units. They made games they wanted to make, games that people wanted to play. Period.
