i don't think anyone cares about always-online, but when always-online is a requriement as in the console doesn't work without an internet connection, that's a problem. Last I checked, there are about 46million XBox Live accounts(Silver + Gold) yet there are 77million Xbox 360s sold. If the next XBox is truly always online, this means Microsoft will lose out on 30million sales. Hell, people might buy this thing without even knowing that is requries an internet connection. Grandmas don't exactly read the fine print. Nothing good comes of making your consumers be always online. The only good thing here is that Microsoft can track your every move and serve you ads that cater to your interests. That's the only real benefit I can think of that comes from always-online. |
You just answered yourself.
MS has sold 77 million 360s, and yet only 46 million active Live accounts. Do you think a company as massive as MS is dumb enough to not be able to read the numbers? Always Online will be very real, but it will be used in terms of in order to get the full feature set of your Xbox it has to be online. Publishers will decide if the games have to be or not.
