I have mixed feelings about this.
On one hand I liked this idea because Nintendo simple have sucked at most E3's in recent years, last year was simple horrific to watch; Nintendo directs are so much better, they feel like a small and very good E3, this is better for gamers imo.
On the other hand Nintendo will lose so much "free" publicity, heck even in my country the only time (or one of the very few times) when I see video game related news on the papers is during E3. If Nintendo isn't there (or their presence is very small) then people outside of gamers will simple not know the good stuff of the event.
