It's not like it isn't true. There is a curve where you begin losing gamers as complexity goes up, be it in the plot, the setting, or the gameplay. It's just a shame that developers and publisher have realized this, as they've begun watering down a lot of franchises in order to win them more appeal--which rarely works. The smarter play is to make a shallower property from the ground up. There have been many games that I've thought would be more popular had they been less defined, though it would usually mean a less interesting experience for me.
