Emotional attachment is not rational. And the extent individuals give into it, will lead to more and more elements of faith and so on. Of course a person can be more balanced in their life, just as they can with religion also. And what you see with fanboys fully fits the absurdities you speak of. Again, it is more extreme version. One can be balanced with stuff, and temper it, but as was shown, the fandom touches on the same areas as religious impulses.
