I think it was more of a spiritual successor.

Actually, basically Twilight Princess is set in one of the alternate universes that the time travel hijinks in Ocarina of Time created, with this one being created with Ganondorf not entering the sacred realm and destroying the kingdom of Hyrule so they are basically the same.
