Some people seem to confuse past statements. PS3 back then was compared to PS2 because it sold far less than its predecessor, that´s why people said it underperformed. What did PS2 sell in 6-7 years? 130m-140m? Compare it to todays PS3 userbase (6-7 years = 75m) and you understand what the topic actually was about.

That PS3 would outsell X360 was a widespread consent early on, it is actually quite more surprising that even after 6 years PS3 didn´t achieve this yet.

PS2 sold around 103 mn in 6 years whereas PS3 stands at 75 mn. This puts the console close to 25 million sales behind it's predecessor. It definitely hasn't underperformed concerning the competition it faced from other consoles this gen. Not to mention PS3's current consistency as the no.2 selling video game console(1st if  excluding handhelds). The peak towards end of 2009 and the console's subsequent recovery from declining sales is what the OP deliberately fails to signify with the topic but then the issue of not surpassing 360 this far is being mixed here. Isn't the OP trying to confuse the people here?

So the comeback has been made. Let's be clear on that and leave the sales surpassing thing as a separate subject.

Just look at the OP; it's clear that PS3 has done very well compared to X360 - even from the start. Aligning both consoles this becomes VERY apparent.
