Once the Vita gets a price drop, it will sell and we'll see more support for the system.
Even if the Vita doesn't sell amazing numbers, as long the system doesn't lose money for Sony, then it could potentially be looked at as a success. Look at Nintendo with the N64 and Gamecube. As poorly as the two consoles sold, Nintendo didn't lose money with them, they just didn't gain nearly as much as they would have liked. Just like Nintendo releasing consoles after two that sold poorly compared to the competition, I can see Sony still releasing future portables.
